The Barred Rock (Plymouth Rock) chicken is one of the all-time, popular favorites in the U.S. They can’t be beaten for steady, reliable chickens. This Heritage Breed was developed in New England in the early 1800s by crossing Dominiques and Black Javas. Since then, the breed has spread to every part of the U.S. and is an ideal, American chicken. This breed of chickens is often referred to as a Plymouth Rock, but that title actually refers to the entire breed, not just the Barred variety. Other varieties include Buff, Partridge, Silver Penciled, and White.
These hardy, dual-purpose chickens are known as prolific brown egg layers, and the hens are not discouraged by cold weather. They are solid and plump at maturity with yellow skin, making them a beautiful, heavy roasting fowl.
Our strain has the desired narrow, clean, barring on its feathering. They are long, broad, deep-bodied, and bred for strength and vitality. Baby chicks are dark gray to black, with some white patches on their head and body.

I decided to try the Plymouth Rock laying hens from Cayden James Farm, and they have proven to be a solid choice. The hens are hardy and have a pleasant temperament, making them easy to manage. They lay consistently, and the eggs are a good size and quality. The farm’s customer service was very responsive, addressing all my questions promptly. The only reason I didn’t give five stars is that one hen took a little longer to start laying, but she’s now laying regularly. Highly recommend for a reliable laying breed.
